GERMANY - May 1-June 15, 2009
Program Description
Freiburg & Reichenberg Castle
Located on the edge of the scenic Black Forest, Freiburg is a picturesque university and medieval cathedral town with a rich educational heritage. Now a model green, cosmopolitan city of 200,000 people, its skyline is still dominated by the gothic Münster and small streams dating from the Middle ages.
Basel: Mennonite Heritage & Current Migrations
A 30-minute train ride away, Basel allows us to explore the roots of the Mennonite faith, volunteer with Mitenand café, a community outreach to refugees from various origins, and learn about their integration into Swiss culture.
Reichenberg Fellowship: Life in a Castle
An intentional Christian community welcomes our group to join them in the restoration of their 14th-century castle, participate in hands-on renovation, and build life-long cross-cultural friendships.
This seminar invites students to study German at the International House, enjoy homestays, and get a taste of life in a German university town. Lectures on the European Union, intercultural learning, and the challenges of integrating a growing immigrant population combined with short trips to Berlin and Dresden allow students to explore the multifaceted richness of German culture and the ways in which it negotiates what it means to be German, European, and global citizens in the 21st century.
