Computer Lab Administration Procedure
Purpose
The purpose of this procedure is to document how the computer labs are administered.Policy Statement
Management
Information Systems manages all computers labs by installing the same image on all computers (specific to OS). This allows students to access the same software from any lab. All windows computers have been “frozen”. This means that when it is rebooted, the computer will return to its original state. Any files saved to the hard drive will disappear when the computer is rebooted.Lab Categories Defined
Three types of lab categories have been identified:
Public:
The primary use is for student use. Every effort is made to have it available during the posted hours. Information systems provides computers, laser printer, scanner, and consumables.Classroom Lab:
The primary use is for teaching, it will have a projector. It is open to all students when not reserved. Information systems provides computers, laser printer, scanner and consumables.Department Lab:
The primary use is restricted to students in the specified department. Information Systems provides computers, laser printer, and scanner (upon request). The department is responsible for consumables.
Hardware
Windows computers will be upgraded every year in every lab. Macintosh computers will be upgraded every four years. Printers and scanners will be upgraded when determined necessary by Information Systems. Projectors will be upgraded according to the projector replacement cycle.
Software Requirements
Since a single image is used for all the computers, Information Systems must approve any software that goes into the image. Deadlines for software submission can be found at: http://www.emu.edu/is/info/lab/schedule. Software must meet the following system requirements to be approved.
Software must
- be properly licensed for EMU as a site, or for a number of concurrent licenses that are then controlled by keyserver. Infosys will store original media and license documentation.
- not be invasive.
- fit well into our tri-annual imaging schedule.
- work well in a deep frozen environment.
- not pose a significant security threat to the EMU network.
- use less than 2 GB of hard drive space.
- run without a hardware key.
- be purchased by InfoSys.
- be a volume license (must not require a unique serial number for each machine)
