Eastern Mennonite Seminary has a strong record of preparing pastors, mission workers and church leaders. This commitment to biblical and theological training is growing at our extension site in Lancaster.
In an initiative to offer a wider range of leadership training opportunities, EMS hired Mark Wenger as full-time director of pastoral studies in Lancaster in 2005.
EMS at Lancaster is flexible. You can choose what is right for you from among several programs of study, depending on your level of education, experience, interest and goals.

- The STEP Program (Study and Training for Effective Pastoral Ministry) is a part-time, three-year training course of study designed for pastoral leaders – or those exploring a call – who don’t have college or Bible school training. STEP is a fully accredited, hands-on, college-level curriculum that meets one Saturday a month. Learn about one STEP student's journey.
- Graduate-level Seminary courses are offered each semester. These courses are part of the new fully-accredited master of divinity program at EMS in Pennsylvania. Most of these courses meet the Master of Divinity core curriculum requirements of EMS. Students can also earn credit toward a Certificate in Ministry or a Certificate in Theological Studies which can be applied toward a graduate-level degree.
- The Preaching Institute is an innovative in-service training program for men and women who want to improve their preaching. It is a preaching course that travels and has been offered in Florida, Kansas, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Ohio. It works with groups of 6-12 pastors in a given region over a nine-month period.
- Gateway Courses are a series of four courses designed especially for pastors called to Mennonite congregations who do not have Anabaptist background and training. Many pastors are asked to take these courses as an expectation with being licensed or ordained.
- Personal Enrichment – for non-credit – is another reason persons take seminary courses. You can take the Preaching Institute and some graduate-level seminary courses on a non-credit basis.
