EMU's Vision for a New Science Facility
“Shamar” is a word we use as we talk about a vision for the sciences at EMU, including an updated Suter Science Center. It means to keep, protect, preserve, watch and guard.
God’s followers were called in the Old Testament to practice “shamar” for the land. Read more about the meaning of "shamar."
EMU's Commitment to Creation Care
Long before sustainability became a buzz word in common culture, former president Myron S. Augsburger noted in 1968 that humankind had an important “position in the natural world” and therefore needed to meet the world’s needs through “competence” and “compassion.”
Today’s vision for the sciences at EMU is about interdisciplinary collaboration and integration of commitment to creation care in every aspect of programming.
With an updated science facility we can:
- provide space for the sciences and health professions to interact easily around curriculum and research in ways that integrate our commitment to creation care.
- demonstrate in visible ways our commitment to sustainable building through incorporating green design
- allow students to put into practice the concepts they discuss in the classroom.
- facilitate collaboration in various disciplines across campus, for example bringing social work and sociology; Bible and religion; and the justice, peace and conflict studies students together for conversation with the sciences.
- enable EMU to prepare a new generation of health care providers and scientists to work toward shamar in our homes, churches and communities.
EMU’s vision for the sciences is about research, practice and collaboration for renewal of creation. To converse with someone about supporting this effort, please contact .
